Pipe Lining vs. Pipe Bursting: Two Trenchless Methods Compared

CIPP lining

A resin-saturated liner is inserted into the cleaned existing pipe and cured in place, forming a new jointless pipe inside the old one.

Pipe bursting

A bursting head pulled through the old pipe breaks it outward while new HDPE pipe is pulled in behind it, usually from two small access pits.

When lining fits

Cracked or root-damaged pipe that still holds its shape and slope is a typical lining candidate.

When bursting fits

Collapsed, badly offset, or undersized pipe often calls for bursting, since lining needs an intact host pipe.

When neither fits

A line with a major belly or wrong slope usually needs excavation for that section.
