What Happens During a Sewer Camera Inspection?

Finding an access point

The technician feeds the camera through an outdoor cleanout when one exists. Without a cleanout, access may be through a toilet flange or a roof vent, or a cleanout may need to be installed.

Running the line

A waterproof camera on a flexible push rod travels the lateral toward the public main while a counter records distance in feet.

What the video shows

Cracks, offset joints, root intrusion, standing water in a belly, scale buildup in cast iron, and the pipe material itself.

Locating problems from above

Many camera heads carry a transmitter, so a handheld locator can mark the exact spot and depth of a defect on the ground.

Using the results

Ask for the recording and the footage markers. They make it possible to compare repair options and to get a second opinion.
